Tooheys New, the official beer of The Blues, has teamed up with one of Australia’s most revered punk acts, These New South Whales, to create the The New Anthem, paying tribute to the state of NSW this State of Origin season.
Inspired by the spirit of classic pub anthems of the past, from Daryl Braithwaite’s ‘Horses’ to John Farnham’s ‘You’re the Voice’ and ‘(I’m) stranded’ by The Saints, the The New Anthem delivers a crowd-pleaser that doubles as a rally cry for the Blues state.
The New Anthem is written and performed by These New South Whales, one of the most popular punk bands in Sydney. The group, who also make ground-breaking comedy TV, have paid tributes to iconic sites and ‘burbs across NSW, from Parramatta to the Big Banana.
“We loved writing this stonkin’ anthem to celebrate the state of NSW and the State of Origin! Up the mighty blues! See you at the Bogey Hole!” said Jamie Timony, band member.
“Now we can celebrate together in person again, Blues supporters will be cheering on their team at every pub across the state, so it’s only right to pay tribute to NSW with a song. Whether they’re watching at home or out with mates, we know this tune is going to be belted out by fans throughout the season, so cheers to The Blues and the state.” said Lion Australia Brand Director, Chris Allan.
Tooheys New has been the official beer partner of The Blues since 2018, but previously sponsored the team for 13 series in the 90s at the peak of their success. After New South Wales residents watched the majority of last year’s State of Origin in lockdown, Jodie Cross, NSWRL Chief Commercial Officer said that The New Anthem is celebrating NSW coming back together:
“New South Wales missed out on hosting the State of Origin games last year, which means in 2022 Blues supporters are more ready than ever to show up and rally for their team. The Tooheys New Anthem is a great way to show solidarity for The Blues team and our amazing state,” said Jodie.
Tooheys New has also released a limited edition Tooheys New can for the State of Origin season. Designed by Sydney artist Kentaro Yoshida, the cans feature footy-inspired illustrations and images of NSW towns and landmarks. The can is now available statewide at Liquor retailers.
These New South Whales will be performing The New Anthem ahead of Game 1 at The Brewery at the Novotel, Sydney Olympic Park, on the 8th of June.
