Lion supports productivity with expansion of by-products program to NSW, VIC and WA dairy farmers

1 March 2017: - Since April last year, dairy farmers who supply Lion in South Australia and South East Queensland have had the opportunity to access brewers’ grain for stockfeed at competitive rates through the Lion Dairy Pride By-Products Program.

The grain is sourced from local Lion breweries at XXXX (Brisbane) and West End (Adelaide), and is a by-product of the brewing process.  As part of a balanced diet, brewers’ grain can help to increase milk output, enhance fat and protein composition, and improve farm productivity.

The Lion Dairy Pride By-Products Program has proved extremely popular with farmers, who credit Lion’s initiative with helping to drive more competitive pricing of brewers’ grain in the market, enhancing their access to the feed and in some cases improving milk supply, quality and overall farm productivity. For example:

  • Scenic Rim (QLD) farmer Duncan McInnes says accessing grain under the By-Products Program “has certainly helped us and really improved the quality and the digestibility of the diet.  This is a real win-win situation because Lion farmers have the potential to send more milk into the Lion factory.”
  • Murray Bridge (SA) farmer Ian Mueller says grain sourced under the Program “is a cost effective feed to use to help increase milk production and cow condition.  It also helps to add moisture to the mixer wagon and helps to bind the mix together.”
  • Sunshine Coast (QLD) farmers Darrin Grevitt and Ray De Vere have also benefited from Lion’s By-Products Program.  Darrin Grevitt said: “the competitive price Lion is now offering on grain has reduced costs of production by over three cents per litre on my farm, and supported an increase in productivity.”

Ray De Vere added: “access to brewers’ grain has given me the confidence to increase herd size and feed cows better during periods when the levels of pasture availability is low.”

As a domestic branded business, Lion is focused on building long-term sustainable value in the Australian dairy industry. We are excited to be extending the By-Products Program to all farmers to who supply Lion in NSW, Victoria and WA, utilising spent grain from our breweries in Sydney (Tooheys), Geelong and Fremantle (Little Creatures) respectively.  In addition, NSW farmers will also be eligible to apply for citrus pulp, sourced from Lion’s juice operations in Leeton (NSW).

Lion Dairy & Drinks Managing Director, Peter West said “We’re proud to be partnering with our colleagues at Lion’s iconic Tooheys and Little Creatures breweries to expand our popular Lion Dairy Pride By-Products Program to include a brewers grain offer to dairy farmers who supply us in NSW, WA and Victoria.

“Access to by-products such as brewers’ grain and citrus pulp is a benefit we are uniquely positioned to offer, as the only major milk processor with a significant non-dairy production footprint.

“Farmers are telling us that the By-Products Program has helped improve their access to brewers’ grain, and delivered tangible benefits in terms of milk volume, quality and productivity.  We’re delighted with this feedback and have decided to expand the Program as a result.

“While the volume of grain and citrus pulp available under the Program is relatively modest, we’re confident that we can continue to offer meaningful benefits to more farmers, and further enhance LDD’s overall farmer offer,” Mr West said.

Mr West continued: “Our farm partnerships are a critical part of our business and we are always looking for opportunities to deepen our partnership with dairy farmers, including through the By-Products Program.  Longer term, we will explore the feasibility of offering farmers access to other stockfeeds, for example soy hulls and okara, which are by-products of Lion’s Vitasoy joint venture, and also extending the Program to Tasmanian farmers,” Mr West concluded.

The Lion Dairy Pride By-Products Program is also a great example of Lion’s commitment to dairy farmers through what we call “The Three Ps” – competitive pricing, partnerships and a clear purpose.

Grain and citrus volumes are limited, so eligible farmers in NSW, Victoria and WA are encouraged to contact their Lion Farm Services Officer, or DFMC representative if applicable, for more information as soon as possible.
