24 August 2015: - Lion today held a centenary celebration to show its appreciation for 16 New South Wales farming families who have supplied milk to the Dairy Farmers brand for 100 years or more.
Lion Dairy & Drinks Managing Director Peter West said: "The iconic Dairy Farmers brand is 115 years old, and it’s incredible to think that some of the farming families with us today were there at the very beginning.
"While so much has changed over the last century, success in the dairy business is still about hard work, a commitment to quality, building relationships and thinking long-term. These 16 farming families have these qualities in spades, and we’re very proud that they have chosen to partner with Lion and supply the Dairy Farmers brand for 100 years or more," Mr West said.
Representatives of the families attended a special centenary celebration at Mittagong today, together with the NSW Minister for Agriculture, the Hon Niall Blair MLC, dairy industry leaders and Lion representatives.
"Lion is the leading branded dairy business in this state, and NSW consumers have come to expect great quality from blockbuster brands like Dairy Farmers, Dare Iced Coffee and Moove flavoured milk, each and every day. We cannot deliver this without the support of our farmers, who share our commitment to quality, freshness and great nutrition, and believe in the future of the NSW dairy industry."
Lion currently partners with 84 New South Wales dairy farmers: 53 Dairy Farmers Milk Cooperative farmers and the balance contracted directly to Lion. Together these farmers produce 200 million litres of milk annually that makes it way to the breakfast, lunch and dinner tables of NSW families every day.
Dairy farmer and 100 year awardee Ben Honey said: "Our business began in the 1840s, six generations back, and we have been dairying on the same farm ever since.
"We have been with Dairy Farmers since the co-operative was established. In that time we’ve grown our herd to 200 cows and we now produce around 1.8 million litres each year. It’s great the Dairy Farmers brand is still such a prominent fixture in Australia. We’re certainly very proud our milk helps to create quality products.
Fellow awardee Mark Fraser said: "My great-great-great-grandfather would milk the herd by hand for the co-operative truck to deliver milk in cans to people in the local community. Nowadays, the process is a lot more efficient but it’s still the same natural product Australians know and trust. I think that’s why so many of us are still around over 100 years later.
"It’s incredibly important we help the next generation of young farmers inherit a bright future and I have been investing with my son Brad to grow our operation. We now operate three farms and Brad, who has only been running his own farm for 12 months, recently took out Lion’s milk quality award. Altogether, we manage a 1200 herd producing 8.5 million litres of milk annually."

Today’s ceremony also provided an opportunity to give farmers a sneak preview of the new Dairy Farmers advertising campaign, which goes to air on Sunday 30 August. The campaign has been designed to remind Australian’s why milk matters. Milk matters to our dairy farmers who dedicate their lives to it, to our manufacturing teams who ensure its produced to exacting standards, to our milk men and women who deliver it daily, to local shops who rely on it and to everyone who enjoys a soothing drop in their morning cuppa or a splash on their cereal.
Dairy Farmers knows that milk matters too much to under value it. Now we’re asking consumers to contemplate why it matters – not just to us, but to them too.
In this campaign, Dairy Farmers shows and shares its love for milk, before politely asking people to consider the importance of milk, next time they’re faced with a choice at the supermarket fridge.
