King Island Dairy Unveils New Destination For Cheese Lovers
22 March 2018: With over 100 years of rich history, King Island Dairy is the beating heart of the vibrant King Island community, and the newly refurbished King Island Dairy Cheese Store is set to provide even more opportunities for visitors to discover what makes this island truly special.
The King Island Dairy Cheese Store was officially opened on 22 March 2018. The newly refurbished Cheese Store has been designed to create new experiences for locals and visitors to the island, giving newcomers the chance to find out what this community is really all about, and enjoy some delicious specialty cheese at the same time!
The new store offers a dine-in experience with full table service and a variety of indulgent cheese platters – the perfect way to relax with a glass of wine, beer, or a warm beverage. Visitors will also enjoy learning about the history of the dairy and current product range by passionate and knowledgeable team members, as well as shopping for exclusive branded merchandise.
This new tourism experience invites visitors to spend more time on the island, discovering the people, history and environment that make the cheese so special.
Lion CEO Stuart Irvine said Lion’s investment in the refurbishment of the King Island Dairy Cheese Store is all about attracting more tourists to this unique Island, and offering a memorable brand experience that will help create many more passionate advocates for our King Island Dairy cheese and for the Island in future.
Cameron Bruce, General Manager of Lion’s Specialty Cheese business which owns and manufactures the King Island Dairy brand said: “we’re extremely proud of the role King Island Dairy has played, and continues to play, in supporting the livelihood of this magical island.
“We know we have a loyal following of King Island Dairy fans but we want to give consumers even more reason to visit and spend time here, and The Cheese Shop is a fantastic incentive for visitors to pop by, have a memorable brand experience, and discover why this truly is no ordinary island.”
King Island Dairy is a long-term supporter of the King Island community with 80 permanent employees and this number rising to 100 people working on-site during peak times and many more employed at the ten local farms that supply milk to the dairy.
The local community has also been involved in the refurbishment project, which began in late 2016, with Guy Barnes at King Island Constructions leading the project with the support of a number of local contractors. Fittingly, The Cheese Store is managed by two proud locals – Claire Perry and Shey Cooper, both of whom have long histories with the Dairy and are passionate ambassadors for specialty cheese.
The gatekeeper to the stormy western entrance of the Bass Strait, King Island is home to unique environmental conditions that results in cows producing a uniquely rich sweet milk which forms the basis for King Island Dairy’s range of highly celebrated Brie, Camembert, Blue and Cheddar style specialty cheeses.
The Cheese Store is located at The King Island Dairy (869 North Road, Loorana, King Island, 7526) and is open seven days a week from 10:00am – 5:00pm. For more information, visit http://www.kingislanddairy.com.au/cheese-shop/

About King Island Dairy
Located on King Island in the pristine Bass Strait, King Island Dairy manufactures a range of premium specialty cheese and dairy products from locally sourced milk. The milk that goes into our cheeses comes from just ten local farms, which supply 14 million litres of milk per annum to the dairy.
Since starting operations in the early 1900s the Dairy has grown to produce approximately 1,500 tonnes of product each year, thanks in large part to the island’s unique microclimate – high annual rainfall, raging winds and mineral rich soils – which makes the island the perfect climate to produce cheese.
The King Island Dairy specialty cheese range includes Brie, Camembert, Blue and Cheddar style cheeses, and is available nationwide and are among Australia’s most awarded, premium specialty cheese brands. Most recently, King Island Dairy took out the Champion White Mould cheese with our King Island Dairy Discovery Ash Brie 175g.
