More Natural Goodness to Every Australian, Every Day

Lion Dairy & Drinks has announced a comprehensive leadership commitment to not only make its great tasting, nutritious products even better but to also make it easier for consumers to make healthier choices

25 August 2014:

Lion Dairy & Drinks (LDD) has today announced a comprehensive leadership commitment to not only make its great tasting, nutritious products even better, but to also make it easier for consumers to make healthier choices for themselves and their families.

LDD has audited its entire portfolio, and will deliver significant formulation improvements over five years that are expected to remove around 9 tonnes of salt, 1,400 tonnes of sugar and 600 tonnes of fat from its products annually, once fully implemented.

Under the plan, LDD will:

  • reduce added sugar across its whole portfolio by 10%;
  • reduce added salt in its cheeses by 5%;
  • reduce total fat by 10% across all products in its ‘treat’ category;
  • never add ’artificial’ trans-‐fats to anything LDD makes; and
  • eliminate all artificial colours, flavours and added fructose, and maintain its ban on artificial sweeteners, across all kids’ products.

By 2019, 80% of everything LDD makes will either be in its ‘best’ or ‘good’ for you product  categories, according to rigorous nutrient criteria peer reviewed by the CSIRO and Deakin University.

LDD is also announcing it's commitment to roll out front of pack, health star ratings as approved by the Federal Government, together with additional energy information, across 100% of its portfolio within four years.  This will be supported by further information and resources both on and off-‐pack, helping consumers to make more informed choices.

Managing Director of LDD, Peter West, said “We are very proud of the outstanding nutritional credentials of our dairy and juice products.  Almost everything we make comes from Australian farms, and is highly aligned to consumers’ desire to eat better quality, less processed and more wholesome food.

“To us, it’s unacceptable that – despite the obesity problem – many Australians aren’t getting the nutrition they need.  We know that too many kids are going to school without a proper breakfast. Only 1% of teenagers get their recommended daily intake of fruit without juice, and 80% of Australian adults don’t get their recommended daily intake of dairy.

“With many of Australia’s best loved, household brands in dairy and juice within our portfolio, we expect our commitments will remove around 9 tonnes of salt, 1,400 tonnes of sugar and 600 tonnes of fat from the national diet each year when fully implemented, without any taste and quality compromise.

“Lion Dairy & Drinks will make it easier for all Australians to enjoy more natural goodness every day, and improve the nutrition of themselves and their families.

“We look forward to working closely with our retail partners, farmers and suppliers, and other stakeholders as we deliver these core, leadership commitments” Mr West concluded.
