Steinlager was first brewed in response to a challenge by then Finance Minister Sir Arnold Nordmeyer. In his ‘black budget’ he threatened to cut International beer imports to boost the flagging economy, and laid down the challenge for New Zealand’s leading brewers to “come up with an International style lager beer”. So Steinecker was born. In 1962 its name was changed to Steinlager, and it is now exported all around the world.
Steinlager Classic won the Les Amis Du Vin competition four years in a row in the late 1970s, after which the organisers politely asked if it could refrain from entering “to give the others a chance”. In 1985 at the Brewers International Exhibition in London, it was judged the World’s Best Lager. In 1998 it was awarded two Monde Selection gold medals in Belgium, and more recently won a gold medal and ‘Best in Class’ in the lager division at the 2006 Australian International Beer Awards.
Steinlager’s success around the world is credited to its distinctive crisp taste, which comes from the use of the famous ‘Green Bullet Hop’ from Nelson New Zealand.
Steinlager compliments any spicy dish, such as a Thai curry, and its characteristic bitterness sweeps the palate, leaving it refreshed and ready for more. Steinlager is also perfect with tomato based pasta dishes, as the herbaceous nature of the hops enhances the herbs, bringing subtlety to the meal.

Steinlager Pure was launched in 2007 in response to a growing global demand for a light, smoother and ultimately more refreshing style of beer. At the beginning of its journey, Steinlager Pure’s ambition is to express the essence of a modern and ‘new’ New Zealand.
This ‘new’ New Zealand is built on a powerful realisation that coming from a small and isolated country is no longer a disadvantage, in fact, it’s quite the opposite. It gives us a fresh perspective, independence, originality, and the mentality of a challenger with an uncompromising hunger for excellence.
Steinlager Pure contains no additives and no preservatives – just water, barley, hops and yeast, all sourced from New Zealand. Using a selection of New Zealand’s finest hops, including a new variety called Pacific Jade that was specially commissioned by Steinlager, Steinlager Pure delivers a smooth, refreshing flavour designed to appeal to a new generation of premium beer drinkers.

Steinlager Edge is New Zealand’s first full-flavoured mid-strength lager with the premium taste that Steinlager is famous for and only 3.5% alcohol.
Steinlager Edge is built on the belief that finding balance in life isn’t about doing less, but about doing everything. Steinlager Edge allows drinkers to do it all.
Brewed with a combination of the three hop varieties used in Steinlager Classic and Steinlager Pure – Green Bullet, Super Alpha and Nelson Sauvin – the Steinlager Edge hop blend has similar aromatics and flavour to Steinlager Pure, with some of the crispness of Steinlager Classic. Steinlager Edge is a well balanced, full flavoured beer with the added functional benefit of being low-carb.

Steinlager Premium Light
Steinlager Premium Light is a smooth, premium lower-alcohol, lager-style beer with a light cleansing bitterness and crisp finish.
A light floral, spicy hop aroma is present, derived from the addition of hops late in the kettle boil. The hops follow through into the flavour, along with a light caramelised note produced through the use of crystal malt in the brewhouse. Munich malt is used for body and during fermentation further estery/fruity notes are added to the beer’s flavour profile.
Steinlager Premium Light goes well with salmon and spicy dishes.
